CDR Experience Tour in Bavaria: Insights into On-Site Carbon Dioxide Removal

17 Apr 2026

On June 18–19, 2026, the CDR Experience Tour will visit CO₂ removal projects in the Munich area and provide insights into their implementation - with participation from LMU and partners from research and industry.

CO₂ Removal: A Reality Check

CO₂ removal (Carbon Dioxide Removal, CDR) is considered a key component on the path to greenhouse gas neutrality. At the same time, much is still under development—from technical processes to questions of large-scale implementation.

The CDR Experience Tour focuses precisely on this current state. Instead of discussing potential, it highlights projects that are already being implemented or are currently in development.

On Site: Projects, Operations, and Open Questions

During the two-day tour, participants will visit facilities and companies in the Munich area that remove CO₂ from the atmosphere or are testing related technologies.

The focus is less on general introductions and more on specific insights:

What do the facilities and processes look like in operation?

What demands arise in practice?

What are the biggest uncertainties at the moment?

The on-site discussions are intended to provide a realistic picture of the current situation.

CDRSynDia: Dialogue on Carbon Dioxide Removal in Bavaria

The tour is part of the project “CDRSynDia – Carbon Dioxide Removal in Bavaria: Synergies through Dialogue,” implemented at the Department of Geography at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.

The project focuses on fostering exchange among academia, policymakers, public administration, industry, and civil society regarding key questions of carbon dioxide removal in the Bavarian context. It is funded through LMU’s Sustainability Fund.

Scientific Context Provided by CDRterra

The tour is supported by the CDRterra research program, which is coordinated at LMU. The program conducts scientific research into the role, effectiveness, and integration of CO₂ removal.

A collaborative initiative involving multiple partners

The CDR Experience Tour has already been implemented in other regions by the German Association for Negative Emissions (DVNE) and the startup accelerator remove. For Bavaria, the initiative is being adopted as part of CDRSynDia and adapted to the regional context.
